The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is advertising the post of Dock Master within its Proclaimed Fishing Harbours Management unit, stationed at Kalk Bay. This role is central to the safe and efficient operation of a working fishing harbour, with a strong focus on the slipping of vessels and the coordination of the dockyard team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a process that involves both land-based and water-based activities, requiring careful planning, clear communication and strict adherence to safety protocols. The position operates within a regulatory framework that includes the Marine Living Resources Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, so a working knowledge of these legal instruments is essential.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 Certificate or an appropriate Trade Test Certificate, along with at least three years of experience as a docker or in a directly relevant role. Practical knowledge of dry docking is a key requirement, as is an understanding of the legislation governing marine living resources and its regulations. The role also calls for basic familiarity with occupational health and safety standards, as well as skills in general administration, maintenance, equipment handling and basic financial principles. A valid driver's licence is mandatory.
The duties are hands-on and demanding. The Dock Master must initiate and plan the slipping of vessels, analyse the vessel docking plan to determine the materials and capacity required, and assign team members to construct bilge blocks and wedges for the main slip. Safety is a constant priority, both on the slipway and in the water. The incumbent will need to communicate effectively with divers and dockers in a dinghy to confirm that a vessel is en route, apply safety adjustments while the vessel is being pulled out of the water, and ensure the secure placement of the cradle and vessel on land. Continuous alignment and adjustment of bilge blocks during the movement of the cradle is critical, as is the ability to manage side slipping operations using high-tension steel cables. The role also includes the off-loading and safe storage of side-slip equipment after use.
The Department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and preference may be given to appointable applicants from underrepresented designated groups in terms of its equity plan. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to screening and security vetting, including criminal record checks, citizenship status, credit worthiness, previous employment references and qualification verification. Certified copies of qualifications, identity documents and driver's licences must be submitted before the interview, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Candidates should note that the department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and that applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful. By applying, candidates also consent to the processing of their personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
