The Limpopo Department of Education is seeking a seasoned and strategic leader to fill the demanding role of District Director for the Vhembe West Education District. This senior management service position sits within the Directorate for District Management and Institutional Governance and carries overall accountability for steering the delivery of basic education across the district. The successful candidate will operate at the apex of district administration, ensuring that schools, circuits and district-level support structures work as a coherent system aligned with national and provincial plans. It is a role for a decisive, reform-minded manager who can balance operational oversight with long-term transformation goals, stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance.
Candidates must hold an NQF level 7 qualification recognised by SAQA, with a relevant postgraduate qualification in education or management serving as a strong recommendation. Applicants need at least five years of relevant experience at a middle or senior managerial level, demonstrating a track record in leading teams and managing complex programmes. The post requires the SMS Pre-Entry (Nyukela) Certificate upon appointment, a valid driver's licence with an exemption for people with disabilities, and a suite of core and process competencies. These include strategic capability and leadership, people management and empowerment, programme and project management, financial management, change management, knowledge management, service delivery innovation, problem solving, client orientation and effective communication. Functional computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is essential, as is a sound understanding of the public sector regulatory and legislative framework, the education and school management legal landscape, and public sector financial reporting requirements.
The District Director's duties are wide-ranging and pivotal. The role entails managing and coordinating the provision of integrated basic education services in the district, including facilitating curriculum management and delivery, learner support, and the administration of examinations and assessments across all school phases. Institutional management, governance and support services also fall under this portfolio, alongside the management of corporate and financial services for the district and its circuits. A key responsibility is ensuring a seamless interface between the district and circuits so that district, circuit, school improvement plans and subject improvement plans are interlinked and coherent with national and provincial departmental plans. In addition, the post holder must foster stakeholder management and cooperation, building productive relationships with school governing bodies, community partners and other role players to advance education outcomes in the Vhembe West region.
This is a high-integrity post with rigorous vetting. Shortlisted candidates, including SMS applicants, must undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise measuring technical and generic suitability and an integrity assessment. The recruitment process includes special conditions such as the mandatory use of the prescribed Z83 application form, and successful candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial and asset records, as well as qualification and employment verification, in addition to security clearance. Employment decisions will be informed by the Department's Employment Equity Plan, and the department reserves the right not to fill the post. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned education leader to shape the quality of schooling across an entire district, demanding both strategic vision and hands-on managerial rigour.
