This position offers an opportunity to lead the risk and compliance audit function within the Gauteng Audit Services unit, based in Johannesburg. The Director will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and management across audit engagements for Gauteng Provincial Government departments and trading entities. The role is set within the broader public service audit environment and requires a strong understanding of governance, financial management, and internal audit standards. The successful candidate will be expected to guide the compilation and execution of three-year risk-based audit plans covering multiple departments, ensuring that all audit work aligns with the unit’s methodology, the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing, and recognised best practice.

Candidates must possess a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 7 in Internal Auditing or Accounting, or a four-year B-Tech degree with majors in Accounting and Auditing. A postgraduate qualification and professional certifications such as Certified Internal Auditor or Chartered Accountant will be an added advantage. In addition, applicants need at least five years of experience at middle or senior managerial level within internal audit. A valid driver’s licence is required, and candidates must be prepared to obtain the Public Service Senior Management Service Pre-Entry Certificate prior to appointment. Thorough knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, Department of Public Service and Administration frameworks, and the IIA Standards is essential for effective performance in this role.

The core duties involve managing the entire audit process from planning through to reporting, with direct responsibility for developing and overseeing the implementation of three-year risk-based audit plans. The Director will ensure that audits are conducted in line with the Gauteng Audit Services methodology and maintain robust stakeholder engagement and reporting mechanisms. The role also encompasses extensive operational and administrative responsibilities, including human resource management, recruitment, discipline, staff performance management, and development. The Director will formulate the unit’s operational plan, monitor progress, and submit required administrative reports. Financial management, procurement, asset management, work allocation, and the implementation of the unit’s risk management mitigation plan all fall within the scope of this leadership position.

The post has been earmarked for employment equity purposes, specifically to address the representation of women and youth at Senior Management level within the public service. This is a senior leadership role that demands a combination of technical audit expertise, managerial acumen, and a commitment to sound governance principles. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in strengthening oversight and accountability within Gauteng provincial audit operations.
