The Department is seeking a seasoned and strategic leader to fill the post of Director: Information and Communication Technology Management, a senior management service position based in Durban. Operating within a dynamic public service environment, the director will be responsible for providing overarching leadership to the ICT directorate, ensuring that the department’s technology systems, infrastructure, and information resources support its operational objectives and statutory obligations. This role sits at the heart of modernising and securing the department’s digital environment, and it requires a blend of technical expertise, governance knowledge, and managerial acumen.

Candidates must hold a recognised Degree or NQF Level 7 qualification in Information Technology and Information Management Systems, as accredited by SAQA, together with at least five years of relevant middle or senior management experience within an IT and information management environment. In addition, applicants must have successfully completed the Nyukela Public Service Pre-entry Programme as endorsed by the National School of Government, and possess a valid driver’s licence. The selection process for this SMS post is rigorous: shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a technical exercise and an interview, and up to three candidates may then be invited to complete psychometric assessments measuring cognitive capabilities, behavioural preferences, emotional intelligence, and integrity.

The successful incumbent will be expected to perform a range of key performance areas. These include ensuring the provisioning of information technology services, equipment, and software programs across the department; identifying and delivering information system requirements; providing comprehensive information management support services; establishing and maintaining a departmental information resource centre; and managing the efficient and effective utilisation of both human and financial resources within the directorate. The post demands extensive knowledge of legislative and regulatory frameworks, including the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the Public Finance Management Act and Treasury Regulations, the Promotion of Access to Information Act, the SITA Act, and the Archives Act. Familiarity with global IT processes, computer hardware and software, operating systems, and governance frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL, and ISO is also essential.

Beyond technical depth, the director must possess strong strategic planning, analytical, and decision-making skills, along with exceptional communication, facilitation, presentation, and negotiation abilities. Personal attributes such as assertiveness, sound time management, and networking capacity are crucial for engaging with stakeholders across the public sector. This is a Level 13, all-inclusive remuneration post, reflecting the seniority and scope of responsibility. As a public service SMS role, it carries expectations of high-level integrity, accountability, and service delivery excellence. Applicants may direct queries to the contact person named in the original circular. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ICT and information management professional seeking to shape the technological direction of a government department and contribute significantly to the public good.
