This senior leadership position within the Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism is based at the Head Office in Mbombela and offers an opportunity to shape provincial economic policy through rigorous analysis and research. As the Director of Economic Analysis, the successful candidate will head a directorate responsible for generating the evidence base that informs government planning, budgeting, and strategy. The role sits at the intersection of data, economics, and public administration, requiring a leader who can translate complex statistical and econometric information into actionable insights for decision-makers across the province.
Applicants must hold an appropriate Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at NQF Level 7 as recognised by SAQA, with a postgraduate qualification in Economics considered a strong advantage. A minimum of five years’ experience at middle or senior managerial level is required, specifically in economic analysis, economic modelling, and economic research. The successful candidate will also need to complete the Nyukela Certificate for entry into the Senior Management Service upon appointment, and must possess a valid driver’s licence. The role demands deep knowledge of applied statistics, econometrics, data management, and public sector strategies, as well as familiarity with legislation such as the Public Service Act, PFMA, MFMA, Treasury Regulations, and the Labour Relations Act. Practical proficiency in economic modelling packages such as EViews and Stata, advanced Excel, and other data analysis tools is essential, along with a thorough understanding of the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy and the National Development Plan.
The core duties are extensive and centre on managing the production of key economic publications. This includes analysing Statistics South Africa’s CPI reports to develop monthly Provincial Inflation Bulletins, coordinating the quarterly Provincial Labour Bulletin following the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, and managing the compilation of Socio-Economic Profiles for every district and local municipality. The Director will also oversee the bi-annual Provincial Economic Review and Outlook and Socio-Economic Review and Outlook reports, prepare presentations for senior audiences, and lead socio-economic research that informs departmental and provincial planning, policy, and budget processes. The role involves participating in various forums, including local economic development, IDP, DDM, and inter-provincial structures such as the Public Sector Economist Forum, and providing technical support in the application of economic analysis tools. Managerial responsibilities include overseeing the directorate’s budget, human resources, asset utilisation, risk management, internal controls, and delivery of Annual Performance Plan targets.
Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical capability, leadership, project management, financial management, communication, and integrity. Shortlisted applicants will need to submit certified documents and provide SAQA evaluation for foreign qualifications, and must disclose any business interests with organs of state. This is a demanding but rewarding role for an economist ready to lead provincial economic intelligence.
