This position offers a unique and challenging opportunity for a qualified diesel mechanic to spend an extended period at South Africa’s remote Marion Island, part of the Sub-Antarctic region. The successful candidate will be appointed on a contract of roughly fifteen months, with the core deployment involving a full year on the island from April 2027 to May 2028. There is no option to return to South Africa before that date, so the role demands resilience, adaptability, and the ability to live and work harmoniously within a small, isolated community. Based at the research base, the incumbent will form part of the technical team reporting to the technical team leader, and will be expected to support the broader functioning of the expedition beyond strictly mechanical tasks.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Diesel Mechanic Section 26D Red Seal Trade Certificate issued by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations, or an equivalent recognised qualification, together with at least three years of post-trade experience in diesel mechanics or a directly related field. Practical expertise is essential, specifically in the maintenance, diagnostics, repair and fault-finding of diesel engines and generators. The role also requires familiarity with engine management systems, the ability to operate electronic diagnostic tools, and the capacity to interpret diagnostic results accurately. A sound knowledge of good workshop practices, the correct use of basic workshop tools, and an understanding of current occupational health and safety policies are also expected. Experience with refrigeration systems would be an advantage, as would computer literacy, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
The core duties centre on the maintenance and operation of the base’s power generators and related equipment. This includes servicing and repairing air-conditioning, refrigeration, water reticulation, and wastewater systems. The mechanic will also be responsible for replacing and repairing mechanical pumps and valves, undertaking pipe fitting, and maintaining and repairing forklifts, telescopic cranes, portable generators, and transfer pumps. Operation of forklifts and cargo handling equipment is required, as is the maintenance of field huts and field equipment. Beyond these technical responsibilities, the incumbent will prepare monthly and annual reports, conduct stock-takes to order spares and equipment, and participate in the common non-technical duties that all expedition members share.
Candidates must be physically fit and mentally strong, as the remote environment can affect both physical and mental well-being, as well as relationships with family and close associates. Long hours in extreme conditions may be required, sometimes on tasks unrelated to the primary function. Although the base is well equipped with email, fax and satellite telephone facilities, the successful applicant must be self-sufficient and self-motivated. Short-listed candidates will undergo screening, security vetting, and a rigorous medical examination, as well as psychometric assessment, all arranged at no cost to applicants. This is a demanding but rewarding position for a skilled mechanic seeking an extraordinary professional adventure.
