The Diagnostic Radiographer position at General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital offers an opportunity to join a busy public health facility in KwaZulu-Natal, providing essential imaging services to the community. This role sits within the hospital’s radiography department, working under the supervision of the Radiography Manager and alongside a team of radiographers, community service practitioners, and junior staff. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality diagnostic imaging services across the hospital, including emergency and routine examinations, while ensuring patient safety and adherence to radiation control standards. The post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation, with three possible levels based on years of relevant experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Practice Diagnostic Radiographer. Entry-level candidates with no experience may apply for Grade 1, while those with at least ten years of appropriate experience can be considered for Grade 2, and those with twenty years or more for Grade 3. The hospital offers additional benefits such as a thirteenth cheque, optional medical aid, housing allowance subject to prescribed requirements, and an inhospitable allowance of twelve percent.
Candidates must hold a Matric or Senior Certificate, a National Diploma or Degree in Diagnostic Radiography, and a current registration certificate with the HPCSA as a Diagnostic Radiographer in Independent Practice, along with a valid practice receipt. A basic knowledge of computed tomography is considered an added advantage. The role demands sound knowledge of diagnostic radiographic procedures and equipment, a thorough understanding of radiation control and safety, good communication and interpersonal skills, and familiarity with relevant health and safety legislation. The duties are comprehensive: providing a twenty-four hour diagnostic radiography service, executing all clinical procedures competently to prevent complications, promoting good health practices and optimal patient care, and upholding the Batho Pele principles for effective service delivery. The radiographer will also perform reception and clerical duties when necessary, participate in quality assurance programs, contribute to departmental policy and procedure development, and attend monthly departmental meetings. A key responsibility is the supervision of junior radiography staff and community service radiographers, including conducting Employee Performance Management and Development assessments for junior team members.
This is a full-time, permanent post within the provincial Department of Health, and the department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer aiming to promote representivity across all occupational categories. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The appointment is subject to a positive outcome from State Security Agency checks, including criminal clearance, credit records, and citizenship verification, as well as SAQA verification of qualifications and confirmation of previous experience. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both scored as additional criteria during the interview. Applicants must submit a completed Z83 employment form and a detailed curriculum vitae, with certified copies of qualifications and other documents only requested from shortlisted candidates before the interview. The reference number must be indicated on the Z83 form, and failure to comply with any instructions will disqualify the application. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if no notification is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. No transport or subsistence payments will be made for interview attendance. Enquiries can be directed to the Radiography Manager at the hospital’s telephone number. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated radiographer to contribute to public healthcare in a regional hospital setting.
