This position offers an opportunity for a qualified diagnostic radiographer to join the team at Newcastle Regional Hospital, a public health facility in KwaZulu-Natal. The role is graded at the professional level for radiographers, with entry points determined by years of relevant post-registration experience. As a diagnostic radiographer in this setting, the successful candidate will be expected to deliver high-quality imaging services across a busy hospital environment, with a particular emphasis on specialised paediatric, neonatal, and obstetric imaging. This includes performing neonatal chest X-rays, mobile and bedside imaging in intensive care units, and theatre imaging, all while maintaining strict radiation protection standards. The role is situated within a multi-disciplinary team and requires a commitment to the public sector’s Batho Pele principles, the Ideal Hospital Framework, and compliance with the Office of Health Standards Compliance.

Applicants must hold a Matric or Senior Certificate, along with a National Diploma, BTech, or Degree in Diagnostic Radiography. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Radiographer is essential, and current registration for the 2026/2027 period is required. At least one year of experience as an independent practitioner radiographer is necessary. Additional experience in paediatrics, neonatal, and obstetrics and gynaecology imaging, or a dual qualification in diagnostic radiography and ultrasound, will be a distinct advantage. The grading structure follows the standard public service occupational specific dispensation: Grade 1 is for those with no post-community service experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate experience after registration, and Grade 3 requires twenty years for locally qualified candidates or twenty-one years for foreign-qualified candidates who did not perform community service.

The core duties involve providing high-quality diagnostic imaging, with a strong focus on paediatric and obstetric procedures. The radiographer must ensure the safety of paediatric patients, pregnant mothers, accompanying custodians, and healthcare staff, and must be able to identify and escalate suspected physical abuse in line with child protection legislation. Compassionate communication, distraction techniques, and appropriate immobilisation strategies are needed to manage anxious or uncooperative minors, and the role includes educating parents on the risks and benefits of radiation. The post also requires participation in quality assurance, image quality audits, equipment maintenance, infection prevention, and health and safety protocols. Reception and clerical duties may be required, as well as participation in 24/7 shift rosters, standby duties, and after-hours emergency cover. The ability to work under pressure in a high-volume public health environment is essential, along with computer literacy, knowledge of radiation control and relevant health and safety acts, and sound problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

This is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The appointment is subject to security clearance, credit record, qualification, citizenship, and employment history verification. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The reference number must be indicated on the application form and envelope, and failure to comply with application instructions will result in disqualification. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
