The Department of Correctional Services is seeking a Deputy Director: Supervision Services to join its National Head Office, specifically within the Supervision directorate responsible for probationers and parolees. This is a senior management position, graded as NCB 4, that plays a pivotal role in shaping and overseeing the strategic and operational framework for community corrections. The successful candidate will be based at the National Head Office and will work within a correctional environment that demands a deep understanding of safety, security, and the reintegration of offenders into society. The role is central to ensuring that parole and correctional supervision policies, legislation, and practices are effective, compliant, and aligned with both national and international standards.
Candidates must possess a relevant Degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences, coupled with at least seven years of combined relevant experience in supervision and junior management roles. Completion of the Correctional Science Learnership or Basic Training is mandatory. A top secret security classification will be an added advantage, as will computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a robust set of competencies, including firearm skills and proficiency with relevant security technology, strong communication and project management abilities, and expertise in transformation, change management, and stakeholder engagement. Problem-solving, analytical thinking, service delivery innovation, decision-making, and people management are essential, as is an in-depth understanding of safety and security within a correctional setting. Personal attributes such as integrity, honesty, confidentiality, and good interpersonal relations are non-negotiable. Knowledge of the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998, as amended, is required, along with assertiveness, networking ability, diplomacy, tact, resilience, and the capacity to influence and impact outcomes.
The duties of this role are broad and strategic. The Deputy Director will facilitate the development of operational plans aligned with parole and correctional supervision objectives, and will oversee research initiatives examining national and international trends in these areas. The position involves coordinating the development and formulation of legislation, regulations, policies, manuals, and guidelines governing correctional and parole supervision. The incumbent will manage and respond to enquiries from Parliament, other institutions, and individuals, as well as handle practice-related enquiries. A key responsibility is managing and consolidating inputs into strategic documents and interpreting legislation, regulations, policies, manuals, and guidelines. The role also requires managing marketing efforts and liaising with various internal and external stakeholders, while conducting monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of parole and correctional supervision programmes. Additionally, the Deputy Director will manage human resources, finance, and assets within the component.
This appointment is made under the Correctional Services Act, and the post is advertised in the PSV Circular. The position offers an all-inclusive remuneration package and is based at the National Head Office. Given the nature of the work, the successful candidate will need to be prepared for a high-pressure environment that requires sound judgement, ethical conduct, and a commitment to the rehabilitation and supervision of offenders. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned professional in behavioural sciences with a strong background in correctional supervision and management to contribute to the strategic direction of parole and probation services at a national level.
