This position within the Information Communication Technology directorate at the Head Office in Johannesburg is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership in the development and management of the department’s entire ICT infrastructure environment. As a Deputy Director, the post operates at an entry-level management tier and is accountable for translating the broader departmental technology goals into a coherent infrastructure plan, while simultaneously ensuring that all network, telecommunication, data storage, and end-user computing systems remain available, secure, and aligned with government regulations and standards. The role is both administrative and technical in nature, requiring a blend of managerial oversight, project governance, and hands-on technical credibility. It forms part of the departmental structure that supports community safety service delivery through reliable and innovative ICT systems.

Candidates must be in possession of a Matric certificate complemented by a three-year National Diploma at NQF level 6 or a degree at NQF level 7 in ICT, specialising in Computer Science or Informatics. Any additional ICT infrastructure certifications will strengthen an application. Applicants need at least three years of experience at an entry-level management capacity, such as Assistant Director, with duties directly related to those outlined in this vacancy. A valid driver’s licence for both Code A and Code EC is required, and applicants must have no criminal record or pending cases. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive skill set spanning operating systems and server administration, Microsoft server environments including Active Directory and Exchange, desktop packages, software licence management, database management systems, virtualisation, SAN storage, and cloud-hosted services. In addition, working knowledge of LAN/WAN networking, Cisco router and switch configuration, PABX and telecom systems, ICT security technologies, and relevant governance frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL, and ISO is essential. Strong project management, business analysis, data security, risk assessment, disaster recovery, and cyber security competence are also key.

The core duties involve developing, implementing, and monitoring the departmental ICT infrastructure plan, and ensuring that telecommunications systems and network infrastructure are provisioned and maintained at all times. The role also oversees the management and protection of organisational data, including storage systems and access standards, and coordinates the maintenance and support of all computer end-user devices, software, and information processing equipment. The Deputy Director sets the direction for ICT infrastructure projects, applies appropriate project management methodologies, and assists with the acquisition of ICT equipment and software by developing specifications and advising on emerging technologies. Leadership responsibilities include coaching, mentoring, disciplining, and monitoring staff performance, managing leave, and contributing to the drafting and control of the section’s budget. The position further entails compiling reports and statistics, ensuring compliance with security and regulatory requirements, and embedding a culture of integrity and continuous improvement across the team.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments—one practical exercise and one integrity-based assessment—which will be scored as additional criteria during interviews. Personnel suitability checks, including criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification, and employment verification, will be conducted for suitable candidates. The department encourages applications from youth, persons with disabilities, and Coloured, Indian, and White candidates, and applicants with disabilities must attach a confirmation certificate from a registered medical practitioner. This is an all-inclusive remuneration package post within the public service, and the successful candidate may be placed according to departmental needs and corridor coordination.
