This position offers an opportunity to lead forensic investigation services within the Department of the Premier in the Western Cape Government, a role that sits at the heart of promoting integrity, accountability and good governance in the provincial public sector. As Deputy Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the full lifecycle of forensic investigations, from the initial intake and assessment of complaints or allegations, through to planning, execution, reporting and finalisation of cases. The role also extends to lifestyle investigations and audits, requiring a firm grasp of evidence gathering, data analytics and digital forensic methodologies. In addition to casework, the incumbent will manage and quality assure the work of allocated teams, oversee people and financial management, and contribute to the development and review of policies and operational processes that support prevention and detection of misconduct.

Applicants must hold a qualification at NQF level 7 or equivalent in Commerce, Law, Auditing, Forensics, BCom IT or Informatics, or another relevant field. A minimum of three years’ relevant middle-management experience is required, alternatively six years of operational experience in a forensic investigation, governance or related environment, with practical experience in conducting and reporting on forensic investigations. The role demands a broad range of competencies, including knowledge of legislation, regulatory frameworks, public service procedures, constitutional and legal arrangements, public finance management, the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, labour relations and performance management. Candidates should also be proficient in using information systems, conducting data analytics and applying digital forensic tools such as Audit Command Language, IBM i2 Analyst’s Notebook, Intella or similar software to collect, analyse and preserve evidence.

Key duties include managing forensic investigation intake and assessment, planning and prevention support, and quality assuring the execution of investigations and lifestyle audits. The Deputy Director will also manage investigation reporting, recommendations and case finalisation, while planning and accounting for the overall performance of allocated departments. Strong skills in project management, communication, problem-solving, stakeholder liaison, negotiation and conflict resolution are essential, as is the ability to analyse and interpret complex information, visualise large datasets, and draft forensic reports, legal documents and presentations. The role requires someone who can work effectively under pressure, manage ambiguity, maintain confidentiality and uphold high ethical and professional standards, while also coaching, mentoring and managing staff.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews and submit vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. They will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, candidates consent to employment references from previous employers, including checks on disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding leadership role for a seasoned forensic professional seeking to make a meaningful impact on public sector accountability in the Western Cape.
