DEPUTY DIRECTOR: CRIME PREVENTION PARTNERSHIPS

The Deputy Director: Crime Prevention Partnerships is a senior management post within the Crime Prevention Partnerships directorate, based in Bojanala. This is a re-advertisement, and candidates who applied previously are encouraged to re-apply. The role sits at the heart of the department’s efforts to build safer communities through collaborative, community-centred crime prevention work. The incumbent will be expected to lead the development and review of community outreach programmes, improve the quality and accessibility of safety initiatives, and create platforms for dialogue on safety and crime prevention. The position also carries responsibility for coordinating the development, implementation and review of Provincial Crime Prevention Strategies, promoting community participation, and strengthening relations between the police and the communities they serve.

To be considered, applicants need a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent, plus a three-year National Diploma or Degree at NQF level 6 or 7 in Social Sciences, LLB, Development Studies, Policing or Community Development. They must also have five years of relevant work experience within the safety and security environment, of which three to five years should be at junior management or Assistant Director level. A valid Code EB (08) driver’s licence is required. The role demands a thorough knowledge of the Integrated Crime and Violence Prevention Strategy, the White Paper on Safety and Security, the SAPS Act, the Civilian Secretariat Act, the Public Service Act and Regulations, the Public Service Code of Conduct, the Public Financial Management Act, and the Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act.

The successful candidate will need a wide range of skills, including community mobilisation, stakeholder management, coordination and facilitation, negotiation and resource mobilisation, interpersonal abilities, and advanced report writing. Programme and project management skills, client orientation, basic research and data analysis, policy interpretation, facilitation and presentation skills, and strong verbal and written communication are also essential. The role requires sound planning, organisation and leadership, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a willingness to travel and work irregular hours. Problem-solving, decision-making, conflict management, change management and computer literacy in Microsoft, Excel and PowerPoint are further requirements.

In terms of duties, the Deputy Director will initiate and coordinate crime prevention programmes, promote community participation, and coordinate the development and evaluation of safety models. The post also involves establishing, monitoring and enhancing community safety structures, promoting public-private partnerships, and managing key performance responsibilities of staff. The incumbent will monitor and report on sub-directorate resources, support the compilation of expenditure budgets, report on activity costs, and assist in developing the sub-directorate budget tool.
