The Deputy Director: Accounting Support position sits within the Financial Governance Directorate of the Department of Community Safety, based in Johannesburg. This is a senior management role focused on ensuring that accounting practices across the department and its associated entities are sound, consistent, and compliant with prescribed standards. The successful candidate will lead the accounting support component, providing strategic direction and hands-on technical guidance to strengthen financial governance and reporting. This is a key post for someone with a strong background in financial accounting and experience at junior management level, as the role demands both technical depth and the ability to manage people and processes.
Candidates must hold a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 7 with Financial Accounting as a major subject. In addition, they need at least three to five years of experience at junior management level within an accounting environment, typically gained as an Assistant Director or in an equivalent role. The position is remunerated with a comprehensive all-inclusive package structured as a basic salary plus a flexible portion, in line with applicable public service rules. The core duties revolve around providing accounting service support: this includes facilitating and supporting departments and entities in implementing accounting policies that meet minimum requirements, managing the delivery of technical assistance and best-practice guidance, and coordinating training on accounting standards and the compilation of financial statements. The post also carries direct management responsibility for the component, meaning the incumbent will oversee staff, allocate work, and ensure outputs are delivered to the required quality and within deadlines.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and both will be scored as an additional criterion during interviews. Suitable candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and applicants from Coloured, Indian, and White population groups to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be submitted where applicable. Applications must be submitted using the official prescribed application form, accompanied by a recently updated comprehensive CV; only shortlisted candidates will need to provide certified copies of qualifications. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department will not accept applications sent by post, email, or hand delivery, and late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and applicants who do not receive a response within three months after the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful. The department also reserves the right not to fill this post or to use alternative recruitment processes. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for an experienced accounting professional looking to contribute meaningfully to public sector financial governance and capacity building.
