The Department of Health in Limpopo is advertising five Dental Assistant Grade 1 posts, to be based at WF Knobel, Letaba, Sekororo, Lebowakgomo and Warmbaths Hospitals. This is an entry-level professional role within the public health sector, offering successful candidates the opportunity to work in a hospital dental unit as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team. The position is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for dental support personnel, meaning appointees will receive a structured salary and career progression linked to their registration and experience.
To be considered, applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate or Matric, together with an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Dental Assistant. Specifically, candidates need an accredited Higher Certificate in Dental Assisting at NQF Level 5, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in this category. Beyond the formal qualifications, the role demands a solid working knowledge of tooth numbering systems, oral structures and dental terminology, so that the assistant can communicate clearly with dentists, hygienists and other clinical staff. A good grasp of regulatory and safety standards is also essential, including CDC and OSHA guidelines, the correct use of personal protective equipment, and the prevention of cross-contamination. Practical familiarity with patient medical histories, medications, dental billing codes and insurance claims processing is expected, as is competence in chairside assisting, sterilisation and instrument management, diagnostic imaging, and the maintenance of patient data and records. Computer literacy, communication and patient education skills are important, along with empathy, strong organisational ability, time management, attention to detail, teamwork and adaptability.
In the clinical setting, the dental assistant will render assistance during dental procedures, ensuring that clinicians have the correct instruments and materials ready and that the treatment area is properly prepared. Patient comfort and care are central to the role, with the assistant expected to support patients before, during and after procedures, helping to ease anxiety and provide clear instructions. The role also includes sterilising equipment, managing instruments and ensuring that all infection control protocols are followed. Administrative duties form a significant part of the work, with the dental assistant taking on front-office tasks such as patient reception, record-keeping, appointment scheduling and processing billing or insurance information.
Candidates should note several important conditions. Applications are submitted online through the provincial e-recruitment platform, and a fully completed, signed Z83 form must be accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum vitae, with only PDF attachments accepted. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, and proof of that evaluation must be provided. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview and will need to bring certified copies of their qualifications, current HPCSA registration and identity document. All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and these results will be considered alongside the interview. The advertised posts are part of the broader Limpopo Department of Health recruitment drive, and applicants are urged to read the full conditions and requirements carefully before applying to avoid disqualification.
