This position offers an experienced engineering professional the opportunity to serve as a Control Engineering Technologist within the Department of Infrastructure, Western Cape Government, specialising in traffic engineering support and safety. The role sits within a provincial government environment where engineering services directly contribute to the planning, design, maintenance and governance of public infrastructure. As an OSD-graded post, the vacancy carries the responsibilities and career progression associated with the Occupation Specific Dispensation, and the successful candidate will be expected to operate at a senior technologist level, providing technical leadership and ensuring that engineering outputs meet legal, professional and organisational standards.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering or a relevant equivalent qualification, together with a minimum of six years of post-qualification experience as an engineering technologist. Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technologist is required, as is a valid code B driving licence. The role demands a broad and deep competency profile, including project management, technical design and traffic analysis, research and development, computer-aided engineering applications, legal compliance, technical report writing, technical consulting, networking, professional judgment, process knowledge, maintenance skills, and mobile equipment operating skills. In addition, behavioural competencies such as problem solving, decision making, team leadership, creativity, financial management, customer focus, conflict management, negotiation and change management are essential for success in this senior role.

The core duties revolve around ensuring engineering design and analysis effectiveness. This includes performing final reviews, approvals and audits on new engineering designs in line with established design principles and theory. The technologist will also be responsible for maintaining engineering operational effectiveness by managing the execution of maintenance strategies through the provision of appropriate structures, systems and resources. Governance forms a key part of the role, requiring the allocation, control, monitoring and reporting on all resources. Financial management is another critical responsibility, with the post holder expected to ensure the availability and management of funds to meet Medium-Term Expenditure Framework objectives within the engineering environment. People management is equally important, involving the development, motivation and utilisation of human resources to maintain a competent knowledge base and support the continued success of engineering services according to organisational needs.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, the submission of duly completed vetting and supporting documentation, and two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers and managers for employment references, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Applications are accepted only through the prescribed online channels, and no late submissions will be considered. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for a registered professional technologist seeking to apply their expertise to traffic engineering safety and support within a government infrastructure context.
