This position is for a Control Engineering Technician Grade A, an OSD-graded technical role based in the eThekwini District. The incumbent will operate within a provincial government department, taking charge of the planning, design, and delivery of civil engineering infrastructure, irrigation systems, and mechanisation projects. The role is central to the district’s agricultural and rural engineering functions, requiring a blend of technical expertise, project management, and regulatory compliance. The technician will be expected to manage and control the full lifecycle of infrastructure and irrigation projects, from initial design through to implementation and evaluation, while also providing specialist technical support and advisory services to internal teams and external stakeholders.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma in Civil Engineering at NQF level 6, be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as an Engineering Technician, and possess a valid driver’s licence. A minimum of six years of post-qualification technical experience in either agricultural or civil engineering is required. The role demands a broad working knowledge of programme and project management, engineering design and analysis, research and development, and computer-aided engineering applications. Familiarity with relevant legislation is essential, including the National Water Act, the Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act, the Labour Relations Act, the Public Service Act, the Public Administration Management Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and the RSA Constitution, alongside departmental HRM and HRD policies and public service regulations. Candidates must also be well-versed in occupational health and safety standards and technical report writing.

The duties are wide-ranging. The successful candidate will manage and control the planning and design of infrastructure, irrigation, and mechanisation, oversee technical support for related projects, and provide technical advisory services to ensure sound engineering decisions. The role also involves monitoring and evaluating district engineering projects to ensure they meet specifications, timelines, and budgets, as well as managing the resources of the division, including people, finances, and equipment. This requires strong project planning and management skills, technical design and analysis ability, and competence in financial management, people management, and conflict management. The technician must also demonstrate problem-solving, decision-making, creativity, customer focus, and excellent communication and presentation skills. The ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision, while being self-disciplined and self-driven, is critical.

Applicants should note that this is a public service position with specific application conditions. The selection process includes pre-entry assessments for shortlisted candidates, covering both practical technical suitability and integrity. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide certified copies of documents. It is important to complete the application form fully and correctly, as incomplete submissions may lead to disqualification. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified engineering technician seeking a challenging role within the public sector, contributing to vital infrastructure and agricultural development in the eThekwini District.
