The Community Liaison Officer position is located within the Directorate of Metro Health Services, based at the Northern/Tygerberg Sub-structure Office. This role is central to strengthening the relationship between the provincial health department, facility boards, clinic committees, and the communities they serve. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing the Western Cape Health Facility Boards and Committees Act, which involves planning, coordinating, and supporting the governance structures that allow community representatives to participate meaningfully in health service oversight. This is a hands-on role that requires regular travel to facilities and community venues, so a valid Code B/EB driver’s licence and a willingness to travel are essential inherent requirements.

Applicants must hold an appropriate National Diploma at NQF level 6 or an equivalent qualification, along with relevant experience in community engagement, communication, and stakeholder coordination. The role demands a solid working knowledge of governance-related legislation and regulations, as well as health promotion principles. Familiarity with health regulations pertaining to district health councils, hospital boards, and clinic committees is particularly important, as the officer will work directly with these bodies. The ideal candidate will also bring strong coordination, problem-solving, and training skills, supported by computer literacy in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. An understanding of project management and the ability to evaluate projects, together with sound communication processes for engaging with communities, internal staff, and external partners, are key to succeeding in this post. Accurate administrative abilities, including compiling reports, taking minutes, capturing community feedback, and maintaining attendance registers, are also required.

In terms of daily responsibilities, the officer will implement the Act by planning, coordinating, and supporting effective governance structures. This includes organising, implementing, and monitoring capacity-building programmes and training initiatives for relevant community and facility role players. The officer will represent and promote the Sub-Structure Office’s health services within relevant health-orientated community organisations, and facilitate stakeholder engagement meetings, forums, and community dialogues. Identifying community needs, concerns, and service delivery challenges and reporting these to management is a critical part of the role. The officer will also compile reports, minutes, community feedback summaries, and attendance registers, and provide technical and administrative support to the Violence Prevention Unit and other components as required.

This post offers an opportunity to make a tangible difference in how communities participate in health governance. The position is advertised through the provincial public service circular, and no payment of any kind is required when applying. Candidates who are passionate about community engagement, health systems strengthening, and collaborative governance are encouraged to consider this rewarding role within Metro Health Services.
