This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Community Development Worker for Region B, based in Prince Albert, within the Department of Local Government under the Western Cape Government. The role is central to bridging the gap between communities and government services, ensuring that residents in the region are aware of and able to access the full range of public services available to them. Working within a structured government environment, the incumbent will act as a key link between community members and the relevant government structures, helping to translate local needs into actionable inputs for policy making and service delivery.
To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4. The position requires a solid working knowledge of applicable policies, legislation, guidelines, standards, procedures and best practices within the public service. A deep understanding of the composition and functioning of communities in the Western Cape is essential, as is the ability to facilitate public participation in policy making and service delivery. Candidates should also demonstrate strong project organisation skills, interpersonal abilities, report writing and reporting skills, proven computer literacy in MS Office, self-management with strict adherence to timelines, and effective written and verbal communication.
The core duties involve informing and assisting communities in the Western Cape with access to services provided by government structures. The Community Development Worker will determine the needs of communities and communicate these needs to the relevant authorities, ensuring that local voices are heard. Another key responsibility is promoting networks and enhancing the activities of existing local community workers, all aimed at improved service delivery. The role also requires compiling reports and documents on progress, issues attended to, actions taken and outcomes as required. Staying up to date regarding all services rendered by government, as well as the processes and mechanisms to access those services, is a critical ongoing part of the job.
Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews on a date and time determined by the department. They will be required to submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe prior to the interview; failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from further consideration. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, including enquiries relating to disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone committed to community development and public service within the Western Cape.
