This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Community Development Worker for Region B, based in Malmesbury, within the Department of Local Government under the Western Cape Government. The role is central to bridging the gap between communities and government structures, ensuring that residents across the Western Cape can access the full range of public services available to them. As a field-facing professional, you will be expected to work directly with community members, local organisations and existing community workers, helping to identify needs, communicate those needs to the relevant authorities, and strengthen the networks that support effective service delivery.
To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4. Beyond the formal qualification, the department is looking for individuals with a solid understanding of applicable policies, legislation, guidelines, standards and best practices within the public service. Knowledge of the composition and functioning of communities in the Western Cape is essential, as is the ability to facilitate public participation in policy-making and service delivery processes. Strong project organisation skills, interpersonal abilities, report writing and reporting skills are required, along with proven computer literacy in MS Office. Candidates should also demonstrate self-management, the ability to adhere to timelines, and effective written and verbal communication skills.
The core duties of the role involve informing and assisting communities with access to services provided by government structures, determining community needs and communicating these to the relevant bodies, and promoting networks that enhance the activities of existing local community workers. You will be expected to compile reports and documents on progress, issues attended to, actions taken and outcomes, ensuring that there is a clear record of engagement and follow-up. Keeping up to date with all services rendered by government, as well as the processes and mechanisms for accessing those services, is a key ongoing responsibility.
Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a thorough selection process. This includes attending interviews on a date determined by the department, submitting duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within the timeframe communicated, and undertaking two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, which may include enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone committed to community development and public service within the Western Cape.
