This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Community Development Worker for Region A, based in Strandfontein, within the Western Cape Government’s Department of Local Government. The role sits at the heart of the department’s efforts to bridge the gap between communities and government, ensuring that residents across the Western Cape can access the full range of public services available to them. As a field-facing worker, you will act as a vital link between local communities and the structures of government, helping to translate community needs into actionable inputs for policy-making and service delivery. The work is grounded in the principles of public participation, and you will be expected to work proactively with community members, local organisations and government officials to improve the responsiveness and quality of services.

To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4. Beyond the formal qualification, the department is looking for individuals with a solid understanding of applicable policies, legislation, guidelines, standards and best practices in the public service. Knowledge of the composition and functioning of communities in the Western Cape is essential, as are facilitation skills that support meaningful public participation in policy-making and service delivery. On the technical side, you will need proven computer literacy in MS Office, strong project organisation abilities, and well-developed interpersonal and report-writing skills. Self-management, the ability to adhere to timelines, and effective written and verbal communication are also key competencies for success in this post.

The core duties of the Community Development Worker involve informing and assisting communities with access to government services, determining the needs of communities and communicating those needs to the relevant structures, and promoting networks that enhance the activities of existing local community workers. You will also be responsible for compiling reports and documents on progress, issues attended to, actions taken and outcomes achieved, as required. Staying up to date on all services rendered by government, as well as the processes and mechanisms to access those services, is a continuous part of the role.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, the submission of vetting and supporting documentation, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements, and one integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The department’s employment equity targets will guide the selection process, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone committed to community development and public service in the Western Cape.
