This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Community Development Worker for Region A, based in Khayelitsha, within the Department of Local Government under the Western Cape Government. The role is central to bridging the gap between communities and government services, ensuring that residents in the region are aware of, and able to access, the full range of public services available to them. Working within a broader provincial framework, the incumbent will act as a key link between community members and government structures, helping to translate local needs into actionable inputs for policy-making and service delivery.
To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4. The position demands a solid understanding of applicable policies, legislation, guidelines, standards, procedures, and best practices within the public service. Knowledge of the composition of Western Cape communities and how they function is essential, as is the ability to facilitate public participation in policy-making and service delivery processes. Strong project organisation skills, interpersonal abilities, report writing and reporting skills, and proven computer literacy in MS Office are required. Candidates should also demonstrate self-management, the ability to adhere to timelines, and effective written and verbal communication skills.
The core duties involve informing and assisting communities across the Western Cape with access to services provided by government structures. This includes determining the needs of communities and communicating those needs to the relevant authorities, as well as promoting networks and enhancing the activities of existing local community workers to improve service delivery. The role also requires compiling reports and documents on progress, issues attended to, actions taken, and outcomes achieved. Staying up to date regarding all services rendered by government, along with the processes and mechanisms to access those services, is a critical ongoing responsibility.
Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a rigorous selection process. They will be required to attend interviews on a date and time determined by the department and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe prior to the interview. Failure to provide these documents without reasonable justification may result in disqualification from the process. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and one integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, including enquiries relating to disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Applications must be submitted before the closing date, as late submissions will not be considered, and technical support for online applications is available during business hours. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone committed to community development and public service.
