This position offers an experienced community development professional the opportunity to step into a supervisory role within the Pixley ka Seme District, based in Douglas. As a Community Development Supervisor, you will be responsible for leading and supporting a team of community development practitioners, ensuring that integrated development interventions are identified, facilitated, and implemented effectively in partnership with local communities and a wide range of stakeholders. The role sits within the broader public service social development framework, where the focus is on empowering communities to achieve self-reliance and sustainable improvement in their social conditions. You will act as a bridge between the department, non-governmental organisations, faith-based organisations, local community structures, and other government spheres, fostering intersectoral collaboration and coordinated planning to maximise the impact of development initiatives.

To be considered for this post, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7 in Community Development, Development Studies, or Social Science, alongside a valid driver’s licence. A minimum of seven years of recognised experience in community development is required, obtained after completing the relevant qualification. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of human behaviour, social systems, and the legislative environment that shapes social work interventions. This includes the ability to engage with people at critical points where they interact with their environments, promoting self-empowerment rather than dependency. Practical competencies such as project management, coordination of community development structures, problem-solving, presentation, computer literacy, research and report writing, financial management, and supervisory skills are essential. You should also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and a firm grasp of social dynamics to influence individuals and groups to take part in their own development ventures.

In terms of daily responsibilities, the supervisor will oversee the identification, facilitation, and implementation of community development programmes, providing guidance and resolving problems encountered by practitioners in the field. You will be expected to mentor, coach, and advise staff to enhance their performance, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery. This includes managing the sub-unit, performing administrative support tasks, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the community development field. The role also involves monitoring and evaluating non-profit organisations to ensure accountability and alignment with departmental objectives, as well as providing educational, administrative, and supportive functions to the broader team and community.

Candidates should note that this is an occupation-specific dispensation (OSD)-graded post, with salary determined accordingly. Only online applications are accepted, and shortlisted candidates will need to produce certified copies of qualifications, identity documents, and driver’s licences before or on the day of the interview. Social service professionals must also provide proof of registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) and a certificate of service for recognition of prior experience. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. All shortlisted applicants will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and will be subject to personnel suitability checks, security clearance, and a twelve-month probation period. Interviews will be held at the Provincial Office in Kimberley. The department emphasises that misrepresentation in application documents leads to automatic disqualification, and it reserves the right not to fill the post. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants may assume their application was unsuccessful. This is a demanding but rewarding supervisory role for a dedicated professional committed to community development and social transformation.
