CLINICAL TECHNOLOGIST GRADE 1 TO 3 (CRITICAL CARE)

This position offers an opportunity for a qualified Clinical Technologist specialising in Critical Care to join the team at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch, a leading tertiary academic facility. The incumbent will provide comprehensive clinical technology services to patients requiring intensive and high-dependency care, working within the Critical Care department alongside doctors, nurses and other health professionals. As a tertiary-level institution, the hospital serves as a referral centre for complex paediatric cases, meaning the technology and equipment managed by the clinical technologist are vital to patient outcomes. The role is graded at Clinical Technologist levels 1 to 3, allowing candidates at different stages of their careers to apply, with entry and progression determined by post-registration experience.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Technologist in Critical Care, and they must be registered as such. For Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required for South African qualified employees, although foreign qualified applicants who did not perform community service need one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 demands a minimum of ten years of relevant post-registration experience, or eleven years for foreign qualified employees under the same condition. Grade 3 requires twenty years of relevant experience, or twenty-one years for those foreign qualified applicants. The grading therefore offers a clear progression path for experienced practitioners. An inherent requirement of the job is the willingness and ability to do standby duty and overtime independently.

The core duties involve delivering a full range of critical care clinical technology services to patients, including operating, maintaining and troubleshooting specialised life-support and monitoring equipment. The role is not purely technical; the incumbent is expected to actively participate in clinical ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing professional insights and ensuring collaboration across the healthcare team. Administrative responsibilities also form part of the post, helping the Critical Care department run efficiently and ensuring service delivery is well documented and coordinated. As the hospital is an academic facility, the technologist will be expected to support all forms of training, including the practical teaching of students, junior staff and other health professionals. Strong problem-solving skills, the ability to perform procedures at a highly skilled level, and adherence to all legal requirements, protocols and procedures are essential. Good human relations, reliability, a hardworking attitude, time management, teamwork across all levels of authority, and clear written and verbal communication are also required, along with basic computer literacy.
