Clinical Psychologist Grade 1

The Gauteng Department of Health is filling a single post for a Clinical Psychologist Grade 1 within the Clinical Support and Therapeutic Services directorate at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. This is an entry-level professional position within the hospital's psychological service, offering an all-inclusive remuneration package. The successful candidate will work in a large academic hospital environment, delivering clinical psychological services to patients across a wide range of mental health conditions. The role is demanding and varied, requiring flexibility to move between different clinical areas and wards as service needs dictate.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and have an appropriate qualification that enables registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Psychologist. Proof of current, active registration with the HPCSA is a firm requirement and must be submitted with the application. Without this proof, applications will be disqualified.

The core duties involve rendering clinical psychology services to patients presenting with anxiety, depression, trauma-related conditions, substance-use disorders, interpersonal and social difficulties, behavioural problems, and other psychological conditions. The psychologist will conduct comprehensive psychological assessments using psychometric tests and relevant clinical skills, and will provide evidence-based interventions including individual psychotherapy, group therapy, and family interventions. Operational responsibilities span designated inpatient and outpatient units, including medical and psychiatric wards, with the post requiring the ability to work across different hospital service points. Collaboration is essential, as the incumbent will work alongside other healthcare professionals, participate in ward rounds, case discussions, and team meetings, and contribute to the broader multidisciplinary team. Community-oriented services also form part of the role, including mental health promotion, awareness campaigns, outreach activities, and psychoeducational interventions. Administrative duties include maintaining clinical records, reports, and statistics in line with departmental, hospital, and HPCSA requirements. The psychologist will manage an allocated caseload, respond appropriately to urgent referrals, and participate in departmental research activities.
