This position offers an opportunity for a registered professional nurse to join the West Coast Health District as a Clinical Nurse Practitioner at Piketberg Community Day Centre, located within the Bergriver Sub-district. The role is central to delivering primary health care services in a community-oriented setting, and the successful candidate will be expected to function both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The post is graded at Clinical Nurse Practitioner Level 1 or 2, depending on the applicant’s experience, and forms part of a broader ecosystem of health facilities. This means that, while the base location is Piketberg CDC, the incumbent may be required to render clinical services across other institutions within the ecosystem to sustain service delivery.
Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, candidates need a post-basic qualification of at least one year in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, accredited with the SANC, or a four-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing with a post-graduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing. Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, at least fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience is needed, of which ten years must have been gained after obtaining the relevant post-basic specialty qualification. A valid Code B/EB/C driver’s licence and a willingness to travel are inherent requirements of the job.
The core duties involve the effective execution and management of several key health programmes within the scope of practice. These include curative programmes, child health services, women’s health, and HAST programmes, which cover HIV, AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. In each of these areas, the nurse practitioner is expected to act as an advocate for the patient, ensuring that necessary health care is provided and that patients receive appropriate support and treatment. The role also requires strong computer literacy in MS Office applications, good interpersonal and communication skills, and a sound knowledge of Community Oriented Primary Care principles.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a practical test as part of the selection process. It is important to note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to applicants who are registering for the first time in the post-basic qualification or post-graduate diploma in the relevant specialty. This is a valuable opportunity for nurses seeking to advance their primary health care career within a supportive district health environment.
