Clinical Nurse Practitioner Grade 1 to 2 (Primary Health Care) (Permanent position)

This permanent position is for a Clinical Nurse Practitioner at Grade 1 or 2 level, specialising in Primary Health Care, based at the Koue Bokkeveld Mobile facility within the Witzenberg Sub-district of the Cape Winelands Health District in the Western Cape. The role is attached to the broader Ecosystem Service platform, meaning the successful candidate will be expected to deliver clinical services not only at the mobile facility but also across other institutions within the ecosystem as needed to maintain continuous health service delivery. This appointment therefore requires flexibility, a willingness to travel within the district, and the ability to adapt to different clinical settings while sustaining high standards of care.

Candidates must hold the basic R425 nursing qualification, or an equivalent such as a diploma or degree in nursing that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification of at least one year in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, accredited with the SANC, is required, or alternatively a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing with a postgraduate diploma accredited with the SANC in Primary Care Nursing. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse is essential. Importantly, candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they are applying for the first time for registration in the specified post-basic diploma and can produce proof of their registration application and payment of the prescribed fees on or before the interview date.

Experience requirements differ by grade. For Grade 1, at least four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing is required. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of such experience is needed, of which at least ten years must have been gained after completing the one-year post-basic qualification in the specific specialty. A valid code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job, given the mobile nature of the service.

The core duties include assisting with the management of the burden of disease in line with Western Cape guidelines and protocols, maintaining and improving quality of care for all patients, and keeping accurate clinical records, statistics registers and referral records. The practitioner will also be responsible for the effective use of resources and stock within budget constraints, participating in community events and initiating health-related awareness programmes. The role demands both independent work and active participation in inter-professional and multi-disciplinary teamwork. Supervision and mentoring of lower-category staff, as well as ongoing professional development and ethical standards, form part of the responsibilities. Desirable competencies include NIMART training or experience, in-depth knowledge of nursing and public service legislation, computer literacy in MS Word and Excel, and the ability to promote quality patient care through implementing protocols, guidelines and standards. The remuneration package for this post includes a rural allowance in addition to standard service benefits, and no payment of any kind is required when applying.
