CLINICAL NURSE PRACTITIONER GRADE 1 TO 2 (PHC) (X2 POSTS) Cape Winelands Health District

This position offers an opportunity for experienced professional nurses to work as Clinical Nurse Practitioners within the primary health care setting of the Cape Winelands Health District, specifically based at either the TC Newman Community Day Centre or the Wellington Community Day Centre in the Drakenstein Sub-district. The role is part of the Western Cape Department of Health’s broader effort to strengthen community-based health services, and successful candidates will be expected to function as part of an ecosystem of facilities, rendering clinical services across institutions as needed to sustain service delivery. The post is available at two levels, Grade 1 and Grade 2, allowing for recognition of differing levels of experience.

Applicants must hold a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification in Clinical Nursing Science, specifically Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, is required, whether as a one-year diploma accredited with the SANC, or as part of a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing or equivalent. A postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing accredited with the SANC is also acceptable. Registration as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, at least fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience is needed, with ten of those years gained after completing the relevant post-basic speciality qualification. A valid driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job, and candidates must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of nursing and public service legislation, strong written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy in MS Word and Excel.

The core duties involve assisting with the management of the burden of disease in line with Western Cape guidelines and protocols, while providing and maintaining high-quality care to all patients. Clinical responsibilities include keeping accurate patient records, statistics registers, and referral documentation, as well as using resources and stock effectively within budget constraints. The role also requires active participation in community events and health awareness initiatives, working collaboratively within inter-professional and multi-disciplinary teams while also being able to work independently. More experienced practitioners will supervise and mentor lower categories of staff, and all incumbents are expected to maintain professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development.

Notably, no payment of any kind is required when applying. Candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees to the relevant council on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to first-time applicants for registration in the post-basic qualification in Clinical Nursing Science or the postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing.
