This position offers an experienced medical professional the opportunity to step into a senior leadership role within the Garden Route District, based at Mossel Bay Hospital in the Mossel Bay Sub-district. As a Clinical Manager (Medical) Grade 1, the incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of comprehensive clinical services within the facility, ensuring that patient care meets the required standards of the Department of Health. The role sits at the intersection of clinical practice and management, requiring a candidate who can balance direct patient care responsibilities with the supervision, support and development of clinical and auxiliary staff. This is a demanding but rewarding post for a medical officer looking to advance into health facility management while remaining clinically active.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner, and must be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. A minimum of three years of appropriate experience as a Medical Officer after registration is required. The role also demands a valid driver’s licence (Code B/EB) and a willingness to travel throughout the district, as the manager will need to support facilities and programmes beyond the immediate hospital setting. A commuted overtime contract is compulsory, and candidates must be willing to work after-hours when required. In terms of competencies, the ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, proven management experience within a health facility, and ideally a postgraduate qualification in healthcare management, which will support the strategic and administrative dimensions of the role.
The duties are wide-ranging and include ensuring quality clinical, non-clinical and medico-legal patient care across the various programmes of the Department of Health. The Clinical Manager will supervise, support, train and mentor clinical and auxiliary staff, transferring knowledge and building capacity within the team. Administrative efficiency is also central to the role, covering all clinical and non-clinical matters as well as medico-legal work. The position requires providing guidance and leadership towards the realisation of the division’s strategic goals and objectives, while also ensuring cost-efficient service delivery at the clinical level, particularly with regard to laboratory services, blood products, medicine, consumables and equipment. This means the successful candidate must be able to think beyond individual patient encounters and consider resource management, quality assurance and staff development as part of their daily responsibilities.
Candidates should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Those shortlisted will be subjected to a practical or written assessment as well as a competency assessment as part of the selection process. This is a senior, graded post within the public health sector, offering a structured package that can be tailored to individual needs. The role is ideal for a medical practitioner who is ready to take on broader managerial accountability, contribute to strategic health outcomes, and make a lasting impact on the quality of care delivered in the Garden Route District.
