This position is for a cleaner based at Sonop Old Age Home, operating under the Directorate of Bojanala District within the North West Department of Social Development’s Chief Directorate for Districts and Institutional Support Management. The role is an OSD-graded post, and the successful candidate will join a team dedicated to maintaining a safe, hygienic and dignified environment for elderly residents. As part of the institutional support structure, the cleaner’s contribution directly supports the care and wellbeing of vulnerable older persons, ensuring that the facility meets acceptable standards of cleanliness and health.

The key qualifications for this post include a minimum of Grade 10 or adult education and training at NQF Level 2. Candidates must demonstrate a working knowledge of cleaning materials, equipment, methods and procedures, and must be able to operate cleaning equipment safely and effectively. Good organisational skills and sound interpersonal relationships are required, along with basic literacy and numeracy — the ability to read, write and count is essential. The job also calls for the physical strength to perform cleaning tasks and the ability to work comfortably and respectfully around elderly people. Being able to function as part of a team is another critical requirement.

The main duties involve providing cleaning services across the facility. This includes sweeping floors, emptying dustbins, and cleaning offices and workshops where applicable. The cleaner is also responsible for monitoring cleaning materials and reporting stock levels to ensure supplies are always available. The safe use and safeguarding of cleaning equipment is part of the daily routine, and all work must be carried out in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements. This means following prescribed procedures to protect both the cleaner and the residents from harm.

The North West Department of Social Development is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer committed to achieving diversity and equity in employment, with particular focus on race, gender and disability. Applicants should note that the application process follows the public service recruitment framework: the fully completed Z83 form and a detailed curriculum vitae are submitted initially, while certified documents and other evidence are only requested from shortlisted candidates. All shortlisted applicants undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and successful candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks, security screening, criminal record verification, qualification verification and financial checks. The successful appointee must also enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose financial interests. As this is an OSD position, remuneration is determined by the applicable government directives.
