The South African Police Service (SAPS) is filling two Cleaner positions at its National Operational Command Centre (NOCC). This is an entry-level support role within a busy government command environment, responsible for ensuring that offices, common areas, kitchens and surrounding premises remain clean, safe, well-organised and presentable. The successful candidates will become part of the broader administrative and logistical support team, helping the unit run smoothly by handling a range of practical tasks beyond basic sweeping and mopping.
To be considered, applicants must be South African citizens and able to provide proof of citizenship at the interview stage. They need at least ABET Level 4, Grade 9, Standard 7, or NQF Level 1, and must be able to produce the relevant certificates when asked. Proficiency in English and at least one other official language is essential, as is basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills. Candidates must demonstrate that they understand how to handle cleaning detergents safely and are aware of Occupational Health and Safety protocols. The ability to operate elementary cleaning machines and equipment is also required, along with a professional manner when interacting with officials. A willingness to work extended hours when necessary is expected.
The duties are varied. Core responsibilities include performing routine cleaning services throughout the assigned premises, maintaining housekeeping standards, organising and keeping the kitchen hygienically clean, and preparing and serving refreshments. The role also extends to store, stock and equipment support, which means loading and offloading equipment from vehicles, contributing to the purchasing of stock, and collecting and delivering vehicles, equipment or documents between venues and offices. In addition, the Cleaner may be required to render gardening services and to transport members or personnel safely to desired locations. This is therefore a physically active role that demands reliability, good time management and the ability to follow instructions.
Applicants must have no previous criminal convictions or pending criminal or departmental cases. Short-listed candidates will be required to produce original documents, including an identity document, Senior Certificate, all educational qualifications, service certificates from previous employers, and a motor vehicle driver’s licence, before the interview. These qualifications and licences will be verified with the relevant institutions. Candidates will also undergo fingerprint screening, background enquiries, reference checking, and address verification, and may be subjected to a full security clearance process before or during employment. All short-listed candidates will attend a personal interview and complete two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment. For certain identified posts, vetting is done in terms of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act and the Children’s Act, and any candidate whose name appears on the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be disqualified. Candidates must disclose if they are respondents in interim or final protection orders under the Domestic Violence Act or the Protection from Harassment Act. New SAPS appointees are required by the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act to provide a buccal sample for the National Forensic DNA Database. Appointments are made under the Public Service Act, and those who retired from the Public Service through severance, early retirement or medical retirement, as well as persons with previous convictions, are excluded.
The SAPS is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and aims to promote representivity in the public service. Preference will be given to candidates whose transfer or appointment advances representivity. The SAPS is under no obligation to fill these posts after advertisement. Only successful candidates will be contacted; if no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should accept that their application was unsuccessful. These posts offer an opportunity for individuals with a strong work ethic to contribute to the effective functioning of a national operational hub.
