This permanent Cleaner position is located within the Emergency Medical Services component of the Chief Directorate: Emergency and Clinical Support Service in the Western Cape public health sector. The role is based at an EMS base and grounds, where maintaining a spotless, safe and hygienic environment is essential to supporting emergency clinical operations. In a health facility setting, cleanliness directly affects infection control and the prevention of injuries, so this position carries real responsibility. The successful candidate will work as part of the support services team, reporting to management and ensuring that every part of the facility meets the required standards on a daily basis.

Applicants must have basic numeracy and literacy as the minimum educational requirement, along with appropriate experience as a cleaner, ideally within a health facility environment. Proven experience in the specific cleaning duties outlined in the advertisement is essential. Because emergency medical services operate around the clock, the inherent requirements of the job include a clear willingness to work shifts and on weekends. Good time management is also required, as is a working knowledge of health and safety procedures, since the role directly contributes to a safe environment for staff, patients and visitors.

The key duties are broad and hands-on. The cleaner is responsible for cleaning all offices, common areas, kitchens and ablution facilities across the EMS base and grounds, including deep cleaning and detailed tasks. This involves sweeping, scrubbing and mopping floors, dusting and polishing floors and furniture, emptying bins daily, and cleaning windows, light shades, walls, toilets, sluices and drains. The role also requires ensuring that all cleaning equipment, such as polishing and scrubbing machines, mops, brooms and buckets, is cleaned after use and stored securely. Daily removal of general waste from the building is another core responsibility. In addition, the cleaner must notify management of any deficiencies or repairs required and maintain good stock control processes for cleaning materials and supplies. The post also includes providing relief according to the needs of the service, meaning the incumbent may be asked to cover for other team members when required.

This is a permanent position offering an annual salary plus service benefits, including a 13th cheque, employer contributions to a pension fund, and allowances for housing and medical aid. The post is graded according to the relevant government pay scales, and enquiries may be directed to the contact person named in the advertisement. This is a stable, entry-level support role within the public health system, ideal for candidates who take pride in their work and understand the importance of hygiene, infection prevention and safety in a healthcare environment.
