This position is for a Cleaner based at the Pretoria ICTU of the South African Police Service, playing an essential role in maintaining a clean, safe and professional working environment within the SAPS premises. Operating at a salary level 02, the role is a general worker post that supports the broader functioning of the unit by ensuring that all assigned areas, both indoor and outdoor, meet a high standard of hygiene. The work is largely routine but requires reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to follow occupational health and safety protocols at all times. Given the nature of the work, the role requires a person who is prepared to be hands-on, can work with minimal supervision, and is willing to put in extended hours when operational needs demand it.

To be considered for the post, applicants must meet several minimum requirements. These include being a citizen of the Republic of South Africa, with documentary proof of citizenship required at the interview stage. The educational requirement is ABET Level 4, Grade 9, Standard 7, or NQF Level 1, and applicants must be able to produce proof of this when requested. Language proficiency in English plus at least one other official language is essential. In terms of knowledge and skills, applicants need a sound understanding of how to handle cleaning detergents safely, familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety protocols, and basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills. The ability to read and write is required, as is the capacity to interact professionally with other officials. Candidates should also be able to operate elementary cleaning machines and equipment.

The core duties of the role are centred on maintaining a high level of hygiene in and around the workplace. This includes cleaning the SAPS premises assigned to the cleaner, which may involve both inner and outer parameters. Typical tasks include dusting, polishing furniture and floors, vacuuming carpets, mopping tile floors, and removing refuse. The cleaner will also be expected to perform routine maintenance tasks around the premises, clean bathrooms and kitchens, and take care of the safekeeping and handling of the various cleaning aids and materials used. Additional duties involve loading and unloading goods, providing garden maintenance services, and washing and cleaning state vehicles as well as kitchenware and utensils.

Several important conditions and notes apply to this vacancy. Applications must be submitted in the prescribed manner, using the new Z83 form, with all relevant sections completed and the declaration signed. A comprehensive, recently updated CV should accompany the form, and only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, both of which will be scored during the interview process. A personnel suitability check will also be conducted, covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from coloured, Indian and white backgrounds to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and those who have not heard anything within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
