This sessional cleaner position within the Western Cape Government’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) forms part of the Emergency and Clinical Services Support directorate. The successful candidates will be based at various EMS stations across the Cape Winelands (Montagu), Overberg (Caledon), West Coast (Vredendal, Vredenburg and Porterville), and Garden Route (Grootbrak and George, including communications, rescue base and fleet) districts. These are contract posts running until 2027, each offering 10 hours of work per week, and are ideally suited to individuals who thrive in a health facility environment and understand the importance of strict hygiene and infection control. The role is essential in maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment for both staff and the public who rely on emergency medical services.

Applicants must have basic numeracy and literacy skills, as well as appropriate prior experience as a cleaner, specifically within a hospital or health facility setting. The inherent requirements include the physical capability to perform demanding cleaning tasks and to operate heavy-duty cleaning machinery and household equipment. Candidates must also be willing to rotate across different departments according to operational needs. Key competencies include knowledge of correct refuse and waste product handling and disposal methods, adherence to policy and cleaning practices, and good interpersonal skills for interacting with colleagues and facility users.

The duties of the post are broad and centre on delivering a consistently hygienic environment. This includes cleaning all offices, common areas, kitchens and ablution facilities, undertaking both routine and deep cleaning tasks such as sweeping, scrubbing and mopping floors, dusting and polishing floors and furniture, emptying bins daily, and cleaning windows, light shades, walls, toilets, sluices and drains. The cleaner must ensure all cleaning equipment is cleaned after use and stored securely, remove waste from the building daily, and notify management of any deficiencies or repairs required. The post also requires providing relief services according to the needs of the service, meaning flexibility and a cooperative approach are important.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes an interview, the submission of vetting and supporting documentation, and two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. The department will also contact previous employers for reference checks, including disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. By applying, candidates consent to these checks. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. This is a sessional post, so applicants should be prepared for part-time, contract-based work within a structured emergency services environment. For any queries, applicants are directed to the relevant EMS district office as indicated in the advert, and technical support for the online application system is available during working hours.
