This position is for a Cleaner based at Murraysburg Hospital, which falls under the Central Karoo District of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. The role is a general service post within the hospital environment, contributing directly to the cleanliness, hygiene, and overall safety of the facility. It is an OSD-graded post, meaning it follows the Occupation Specific Dispensation for support staff, with a fixed salary level attached. The successful candidate will become part of the hospital’s housekeeping team, working under the supervision of a supervisor and alongside colleagues to ensure that all areas of the hospital are maintained to the required standards of the Department of Health and Wellness.

To be considered for this post, applicants must have basic literacy and numeracy, as well as appropriate experience in the field of domestic and health cleaning services. This means that prior work in a hospital, clinic, or similarly regulated environment is expected, where the correct handling of cleaning agents, waste, and equipment is already familiar. There are also inherent requirements of the job. The role demands physical fitness, because the cleaner will need to lift and move heavy objects and supplies, such as large bins, cleaning equipment, or furniture. The ability to operate machinery and equipment, including floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, and other mechanical cleaning devices, is also essential. In terms of knowledge and skills, the ideal candidate should have good interpersonal skills, as the position requires working closely with hospital staff, patients, and visitors. A sound knowledge of the correct methods of handling and disposing of refuse and waste products is critical, along with a clear understanding of the policies, cleaning procedures, and legislation relevant to cleaning practise within the Department of Health and Wellness.

The main duties of the role cover a wide range of general cleaning, housekeeping, and maintenance tasks. This includes dusting, sweeping, polishing, scrubbing, mopping, and cleaning windows, walls, equipment, and machinery. The cleaner will be responsible for refuse removal and must ensure effective waste management, including the separation of hazardous and non-hazardous waste according to hospital protocols. Linen management is also part of the job, meaning the collection, handling, and distribution of clean linen and the proper disposal or laundering of contaminated linen. In addition, the post requires the efficient and effective utilisation and storage of cleaning materials and equipment, ensuring that supplies are not wasted and are kept safely and accessibly. The cleaner must provide optimal support to the supervisor and colleagues, assisting with general housekeeping duties and services as needed, and must always adhere to general hygienic and safe environment standards and procedures.

Applicants should note that this is a full-time permanent position based in Murraysburg. There is no payment of any kind required when applying, and candidates who are shortlisted will be subjected to a practical or written assessment to determine their competence for the role. This is a good opportunity for an experienced cleaner who wishes to contribute to public health services in a rural district hospital setting.
