This vacancy offers the opportunity to lead a team of Child and Youth Care Workers within a government treatment centre, specifically at the JB Marks Treatment Centre, operating under the Chief Directorate: District and Institutional Support Management. The role is that of Child and Youth Care Team Leader Grade 1, with two positions available. It is an OSD-graded post, meaning the remuneration is determined according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation, and the successful candidate will be expected to work shifts as an integral part of the residential care environment. The position carries significant responsibility for ensuring the safety, well-being, and structured care of children and youth placed in the facility, while also supporting the professional development of the care workers under your supervision.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate along with a certificate, diploma, or degree at NQF level 4, 5, or 6 in a relevant field. A degree in Child and Youth Care, or further education and training in this discipline, will be a distinct advantage, as will prior experience in secure care settings. Crucially, candidates need a minimum of seven years of practical experience in Child and Youth Care work, gained after obtaining the required qualification. Valid registration with the South African Council for Social Services Professionals (SACSSP) as a Child and Youth Care Worker is essential, and proof of this registration must be submitted if shortlisted for the position. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong set of competencies, including the ability to maintain confidentiality, effective communication and time management, teamwork, problem-solving, and sound planning and organisational skills. Leadership and interpersonal abilities are important, along with a thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures governing child and youth care. The capacity to perform shift work is a non-negotiable requirement of the post.

The core duties of the Team Leader revolve around supervising and guiding Child and Youth Care Workers, including managing their work performance and supporting their development. You will oversee the admission and related processes for children and youth entering the facility, as well as their access to medical services. A key part of the role involves ensuring the effective implementation of planned activities, residential developmental programmes, and therapeutic interventions. You will also oversee basic life space work, which means being actively involved in the daily living environment and the quality of care provided. The position requires undertaking inspections during shifts, identifying incidents and challenges, and reporting on these appropriately. Administrative responsibilities form a substantial portion of the job, including ensuring that daily registers such as logbooks, medication registers, and incident reports are accurately completed, and that attendance registers are signed and kept up to date. All other administrative functions required by the role must be performed diligently.
