This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated child and youth care professional to step into a supervisory role within the North West Provincial Department of Social Development. The department is filling six posts for Child and Youth Care Supervisor Grade 1, operating under the Chief Directorate of District and Institutional Support Management. These positions are located across four different care facilities: one post at the J.B. Marks Treatment Centre, three posts at the Reamogetse Child and Youth Care Centre, one post at the Khuseleka One Stop Centre, and one post at the Taung Old Age Home. This spread of locations shows the varied nature of the role, where child and youth care expertise is needed in specialised treatment facilities, residential child and youth care centres, and even an older persons’ home. The position is graded according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) and offers a competitive all-inclusive remuneration package.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a secure, caring and therapeutic developmental environment for the young people in these facilities. This is a hands-on supervisory role that involves building positive relationships with residents, rendering developmental work with both the young people and their families, and engaging them in constructive daily programmes. The supervisor must ensure adequate supervision at all times, conduct life space interviews, and play a key part in the multidisciplinary team that formulates and implements individual developmental plans for each young person. Administrative duties are also a significant part of the job, including daily logging, report writing, and processing all other documentation required by the position. The supervisor may also need to escort young people to hospitals, clinics, and other referral services.

To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate as well as a recognised certificate in Child and Youth Care. Current registration with the South African Council for Social Services Professionals (SACSSP) as a Child and Youth Care worker is a mandatory requirement, and proof of this registration must be submitted if the candidate is shortlisted. While not essential, experience in a Child and Youth Care Centre will be an added advantage. The ideal individual will have strong competencies in maintaining confidentiality, communication, time keeping, teamwork, problem solving, planning and organising, and a sound knowledge of the relevant legislation, policies and procedures in child and youth care. Interpersonal and leadership skills are essential, as is the ability to handle shift work, which is a key requirement given the 24-hour nature of residential care.

This vacancy offers a rewarding career for someone who is passionate about making a real difference in the lives of vulnerable young people in South Africa. The roles are based in the Bojanala, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati districts, and applicants should be prepared to commit to the demands of a full-time, shift-based position. The closing date and application instructions are set out in the official vacancy circular, and all enquiries should be directed to the relevant district contacts listed on the departmental website.
