The department is advertising six Chief Works Inspector posts spread across four district offices in KwaZulu-Natal, namely uMzinyathi, Zululand, uMkhanyakude, and King Cetshwayo. This is a senior supervisory role within the built environment, focused on ensuring that construction projects and repair work on public structures meet the required legal and technical standards. The Chief Works Inspector works from the district office but spends significant time on site, where they lead and coordinate inspection activities, oversee contractors, and support the broader delivery of government infrastructure and community development programmes, including the Extended Public Works Programme.
Candidates must have Matric, or an equivalent qualification, as well as a National Diploma in the Built Environment, or an N6 certificate combined with a passed trade test in the built environment. More than three years of relevant, appropriate experience is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. The role calls for a thorough knowledge of the National Building Regulations, the NHBRC Home Building Manual, SABS specifications for building materials, and project management principles. In addition, successful applicants will need strong numeracy, literacy, language, project management and financial management skills, together with the ability to operate equipment and drive to various sites. The department expects candidates to be service-oriented, able to perform well under pressure, flexible to work extra hours, and open to new ideas and suggestions. They must be team-focused, willing to take on challenges, and possess integrity and honesty in all their dealings.
The main duties include identifying needs for new work and repairs by investigating customer complaints and new service requests; rendering inspection services on both new projects and existing structures; analysing and compiling project documents; managing contractor activities on construction sites; gathering and submitting information in line with the Extended Public Works Programme; and supervising the performance and conduct of Works Inspectors. This means the post is not purely technical, but also requires strong leadership, planning, coordination, and reporting abilities, as the incumbent will be responsible for the quality and compliance of works carried out by the inspection team and external contractors.
Applicants should be aware that each district has its own separate recruitment process. Therefore, anyone wishing to apply for more than one district must submit a separate application form for each post, with the relevant district reference indicated. The posts are advertised through the provincial vacancy circular, and interested individuals are encouraged to ensure that their applications fully reflect their qualifications, experience, and skills, as the selection process will be competitive. This is an excellent career opportunity for experienced built-environment professionals who are ready to step into a supervisory role within the public sector and contribute to the effective delivery of government infrastructure projects.
