This position offers an experienced diagnostic radiographer the opportunity to lead the trauma imaging service at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch, a specialist paediatric facility. As Chief Radiographer Grade 1 in the Diagnostic Trauma unit, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day radiographic service within the Trauma Unit while also performing a wide range of imaging procedures. The role is clinically demanding and requires a professional who is comfortable working with paediatric patients and with individuals presenting acute medical conditions. The post is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation, and the incumbent will be expected to participate fully in the department’s 24-hour service, including rotating through trauma, CT, fluoroscopy, theatre, mobile radiography and general x-ray units.
Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa in Diagnostic Radiography, and they must already be registered with the HPCSA in this category. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in diagnostic radiography after registration is required. The role demands advanced clinical competence, particularly the ability to perform advanced CT imaging independently, as well as thorough knowledge of radiation protection, quality assurance and equipment safety. Familiarity with paediatric imaging protocols is essential, as is computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills are also required, together with a working knowledge of the Staff Performance Management System. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound organisational, decision-making and conflict resolution abilities, a clear understanding of quality assurance, and a strong commitment to maintaining high service standards.
The duties are broad and include managing the radiographic service in the Trauma Unit, performing general radiography, fluoroscopy, mobile radiography, theatre imaging and Lodox examinations, and providing advanced CT imaging as required. The Chief Radiographer is also responsible for teaching and training both staff and students, managing radiography and support personnel including conducting performance appraisals, and ensuring quality assurance across all modalities. Equipment care is a key responsibility, which involves liaising with vendors regarding maintenance and ensuring suitable radiation protection measures are in place. The post also requires the preparation of statistics and reports on daily activities and equipment status.
Notably, candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration requirements may also apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled radiographer seeking a leadership role in a specialised paediatric trauma environment.
