This position offers an experienced traffic law enforcement professional the opportunity to lead operational policing and regulatory compliance across the Western Cape as Chief Provincial Inspector within the provincial Mobility Department. Based within the Directorate Traffic Law Enforcement, the role sits at a senior supervisory level and is responsible for translating strategic objectives into practical, on-the-ground enforcement action. The incumbent will oversee the implementation of the Operational Law Enforcement Plan, ensuring that provincial road safety priorities are executed consistently and effectively. This is a leadership post that requires strong managerial capability, as the post holder must direct teams, coordinate resources, and maintain high standards of service delivery across the directorate’s functions.

Candidates must hold an appropriate three-year National Diploma or bachelor’s degree at an equivalent or higher level, combined with at least three years of supervisory experience and a minimum of seven years of working experience specifically in the traffic law enforcement field. A valid driving licence for codes A and EC or higher is also required. Beyond these formal requirements, the role demands extensive and current knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework governing traffic policing. This includes the National Road Traffic Act and its amendments, the National Road Traffic Regulations, the Firearms Control Act and Regulations, the Criminal Procedure Act, and the Code of Conduct for the Public Service. Familiarity with vehicle inspection and impoundment procedures, the completion of traffic law enforcement documentation, operational guidelines for enforcement equipment, and the safe storage and transportation of dangerous goods is also essential. The successful candidate will further need a working understanding of public finance and human resource management, procurement and tendering processes, project and operational management, performance management, and the broader systems of governance and administration within the South African public sector. Knowledge of regional political, economic and social dynamics affecting the Western Cape, as well as the activities of sister departments, is equally important.

The core duties centre on managing the implementation of the Operational Law Enforcement Plan, providing effective and efficient leadership, driving service delivery improvement, and executing a range of managerial functions. These responsibilities require a leader who can coordinate enforcement operations, monitor performance, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and directives. Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. Candidates will also need to submit vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and the Western Cape Government will conduct employment reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving previous positions. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and the post is graded at a senior level within the public service structure.
