This position is a senior management role within the Gauteng Freeway Unit, operating under the provincial Department of Community Safety’s Traffic Management directorate. The Chief Provincial Inspector is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of traffic law enforcement at the unit, ensuring that the provincial annual performance plan is translated into concrete, measurable action on the ground. The role demands a leader who can combine thorough knowledge of traffic legislation with strong people management and operational planning skills to drive service delivery, improve road safety, and maintain public trust.
To be considered, candidates need a relevant three-year tertiary qualification, either a diploma or degree, or an equivalent recognised qualification. In addition, applicants must have three to five years of supervisory experience, as well as seven to ten years of hands-on working experience in the traffic law enforcement field. A valid driving licence for both Code A and Code EC vehicles is required, and an unblemished criminal record is non-negotiable. The role calls for extensive knowledge of traffic management policies and regulations, relevant legislation, vehicle inspection and impoundment processes, records and resource management, and customer relationship management. Strong skills in planning, organising, controlling, monitoring, people management, communication, decision making, problem solving, innovation, analytical thinking, negotiation, computer literacy, project management, mentoring, coaching, and leadership are all essential to succeed.
The duties are wide-ranging. On the operational side, the incumbent must manage the implementation of the law enforcement plan, which includes completing and updating environmental analyses, developing the station’s operational plan based on the provincial annual performance plan, and monitoring monthly performance against targets. The role requires regular communication with station and centre management, facilitating strategic and operational planning, and participating in integrated partnerships with local authorities. The Chief Provincial Inspector must also coordinate stakeholder relations with other state departments and law enforcement agencies, manage service delivery improvement by overseeing administration systems, ensuring registers are inspected weekly, and making sure statistics are accurate, current, and submitted on time. The post holder will liaise with Community Police Forums and ensure Testing Centre Stations operate optimally, while also making certain that all prescribed acts, policies, and procedures are implemented, and that records are properly filed and updated.
Human resources management forms a significant part of the role, including managing grievances according to procedure, facilitating quarterly team building activities, managing leave, developing in-service training programmes, monitoring formal training needs, and managing staff performance. Financial management duties include monitoring monthly expenditure, implementing corrective action, controlling budgets, planning overtime, participating in budget planning, and responding to financial queries from head office. Asset management responsibilities involve monitoring vehicle costs, managing the motor vehicle fleet, ensuring vehicles are in good running order, implementing loss control measures for firearms and other equipment, and managing assets according to the station’s inventory.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and the selection panel will score these as part of the interview process. Suitable candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification, and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and applicants should ensure they meet all requirements before applying.
