This is a re-advertised senior engineering vacancy within the Limpopo Department of Health, based at the Provincial Office in Polokwane. The successful candidate will serve as Chief Engineer for Electrical Engineering Services, a role positioned at Grade A or Grade B level within the Occupation Specific Dispensation, with the final salary package determined according to years of experience gained after professional registration. The position is central to the Department’s infrastructure delivery, requiring the incumbent to provide high-level electrical engineering inputs and guidance across a broad spectrum of innovative and complex applications. This includes shaping infrastructure strategies, policies, systems, norms and standards, as well as signing off on electrical installations. The role operates within a healthcare environment, and the engineer must align engineering solutions with the Department’s health services plan, applying the Provincial Infrastructure Delivery Management System and ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation, frameworks and instruction notes.

Applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate or Matric, together with an appropriate degree in Electrical Engineering, and be registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa. A minimum of six years of relevant post-registration experience is required. Experience gained in a healthcare environment or another similarly complex setting will be a distinct advantage, as will computer literacy across MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and proficiency with virtual meeting platforms. The successful candidate must be prepared to travel extensively across the province and work longer hours as operational demands dictate, and must hold a valid driver’s licence unless they have a disability that prevents this.

The duties attached to the post are comprehensive and strategic in nature. The Chief Engineer will undertake electrical engineering designs, perform final reviews, and manage the approval of audits on new designs according to recognised design principles. The role also entails managing the execution of maintenance strategies by establishing appropriate structures, systems and resources, and setting engineering maintenance standards, specifications and service levels that support organisational objectives. Monitoring maintenance efficiencies is required, along with providing effective engineering and project management services. The incumbent must manage compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related legislation, load project documents and update information on the data management system, undertake research, and manage both people and budgets. Strong skills in risk analysis, technical report writing, budgeting, computer-aided engineering applications, and the interpretation of specifications for procurement processes are all essential, as is the ability to plan and manage a diverse portfolio of projects and programmes. This is a demanding leadership post that calls for a technically excellent, strategically minded engineer ready to contribute to public health infrastructure delivery.
