Key skills include numeracy, literacy, computer literacy, language proficiency, project management, accounting and finance, audit, economic and statistical analysis, legal administration, and strategic planning.

The duties of this position are extensive and multi-faceted. In terms of line management, the Chief Director will plan, manage, and coordinate education research, including publishing and reporting on research findings. The role also involves coordinating the departmental policy development process, which includes initiating and evaluating requests for policy development, facilitating policy alignment, managing the policy register, and providing expert advice and support. The incumbent will develop and maintain knowledge management and information systems, record management systems, and coordinate ICT infrastructure and services. A significant component of the role is monitoring and evaluating the performance of education delivery across all levels, which entails developing and maintaining a departmental framework for monitoring and evaluation aligned to provincial and national frameworks, providing advice on performance indicators, collating and analysing data, and evaluating the relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability of departmental policies and interventions. Strategic management responsibilities include defining the purpose and objectives of the Chief Directorate, driving strategic and business planning processes, evaluating performance against predetermined objectives, and reporting regularly to the Deputy Director-General. The Chief Director will also foster a culture of innovation, manage people by participating in recruitment, motivating and training staff, managing performance and discipline, and promoting sound labour relations.
