This position is for a Chief Artisan specialising in mechanical work, based at the Steve Biko Facility Maintenance Hub and falling under the Maintenance directorate. It is a senior technical leadership role within the Department of Community Safety, responsible for overseeing and directing technical services and support across field, workshop and technical office activities. The Chief Artisan works closely with technicians, fellow artisans and associated personnel to ensure that all mechanical maintenance and repair functions are delivered effectively, safely and in line with government standards.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have at least ten years of post-qualification experience as an Artisan or Artisan Foreman, with proof of recognised experience required for shortlisted candidates. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The role demands a thorough understanding of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, as well as legal compliance and production processes. Strong project management, technical report writing, technical consulting, problem-solving, decision-making, planning and organising skills are also required, alongside computer-aided technical application proficiency. The ideal candidate will demonstrate creativity, sound communication, teamwork, change management, financial management, and a strong customer focus, with the ability to undertake technical design and analysis.

The duties are wide-ranging. The Chief Artisan will manage technical services alongside technicians and artisans, promoting safety in line with statutory requirements, and ensuring quality assurance against specifications. The role includes providing inputs into technical manuals, standard drawings and procedures to incorporate new technology, contributing to the budgeting process, compiling and submitting reports, and consolidating inputs into the technical operational plan. The incumbent will update databases, manage artisans and related personnel and assets, and undertake research and literature studies to improve technical expertise. Liaison with relevant bodies and councils on technical and engineering matters is also required. In addition, the post involves managing human resources for the discipline, developing and motivating staff, and monitoring key performance areas by setting standards and correcting deviations to achieve departmental objectives.

This is a demanding, OSD-graded role with several special conditions. Shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, with technical exercises scored as part of the interview process. A personnel suitability check will be conducted, covering vetting, criminal records, citizenship, credit, qualifications and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply; confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner is required. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use alternative recruitment processes. As noted in the circular, applications are subject to strict compliance with the advertised submission method, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted within three months of the closing date.
