This fixed-term coaching position sits within the Sport and Recreation Unit at Mangosuthu University of Technology, a university of technology focused on career-directed education and community engagement. The role is a three-month contract, re-advertised to find a qualified individual to lead and develop the university's cheerleading squad. The coach will be responsible for building a competitive and cohesive team, which includes planning and running structured training sessions, recruiting talented student-athletes, and developing their technical, tactical, physical and mental abilities. A key part of the job is choreographing routines for performances and competitions, as well as preparing the team for a variety of events. The coach must also analyse performance and implement strategies for improvement, while ensuring the welfare of athletes by helping them balance academic and sporting demands. Administrative duties include maintaining attendance registers, submitting reports, handling competition entries and logging injuries. The role demands strict compliance with both university policies and sport federation regulations, and the coach must model professional conduct, fair play and ethical standards at all times.
To be considered, candidates must have at least Grade 12 and proven experience in cheerleading, whether as a coach or participant. A valid First Aid Certificate, Police Clearance and Safeguarding certificate are essential. A background in dance, gymnastics or a related field will be an advantage. Because training and events often take place outside normal office hours, the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is required.
This is a fixed-term contract with no benefits, and it is a re-advertisement, so previous applicants are not automatically considered. The university is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and in line with its Employment Equity Plan, preference will be given to candidates from designated groups. The institution reserves the right not to make an appointment. Interested applicants must submit a completed official application form, a detailed CV, certified copies of qualifications and academic records, and other supporting documents as specified. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and the university may verify qualifications and share personal information with the selection committee. The position is based at the university's campus in Umlazi, Durban.
