This casual worker position sits within the Human Resource Development directorate of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), based in Pretoria. It is a twelve-month contract role, offering an hourly remuneration structure for a limited number of hours per month. The position is entry-level, requiring no prior work experience, making it an ideal opportunity for individuals who have recently completed their schooling and are seeking to gain practical administrative experience within a government communications environment. The role is designed to provide essential support to the directorate's daily operations, contributing to the smooth running of its human resource development initiatives.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 or National Senior Certificate at NQF level 4, as recognised by SAQA. While formal experience is not a prerequisite, the successful candidate must possess a range of personal and professional competencies. These include the ability to work independently without close supervision, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and remain effective under pressure. The ideal candidate will be self-driven, creative, innovative, flexible, and highly motivated. Excellent coordination skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively within a team. A strong client-service orientation, initiative, and meticulous attention to detail are also required. Furthermore, practical knowledge of Microsoft packages, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook, is necessary for the administrative tasks involved.
The core duties of the role are centred on providing comprehensive administrative support to the Human Resource Development Directorate. This includes taking minutes during meetings and tracking action items to ensure that follow-ups are completed, as well as compiling meeting agendas. The incumbent will also be responsible for coordinating travel arrangements for officials and candidates, and processing Subsistence and Travel (S&T) claims for the directorate. Additional responsibilities include assisting with the procurement of stationery and providing ad hoc administrative support to the Chief Directorate as and when required. This is a hands-on role that demands strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands.
Several important conditions apply to this vacancy. The department actively encourages applicants with disabilities to apply. A critical requirement is the submission of the new prescribed Z83 application form, which has been mandatory since January 2021; applications using the old form will be disqualified. At the application stage, candidates do not need to submit copies of qualifications, but must provide a fully completed and signed Z83 form along with a detailed curriculum vitae. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of their documents before the interview. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. All shortlisted candidates will undergo a pre-entry practical exercise as part of the assessment, and the results will be scored as an additional criterion during the interview. The successful candidate must disclose all registrable financial interests, sign a performance agreement and employment contract with the Director-General within three months of starting, and obtain a top-secret security clearance. All appointments are subject to verification of educational qualifications, previous experience, citizenship, reference checks, and security vetting. The department reserves the right to fill or not fill the post. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). The CV should detail courses passed as per the academic transcript. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and if no contact is made within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
