This vacancy is for a Candidate Scientific Technician specialising in Agricultural Resource Management, based at Cedara Research Station under a three-year fixed-term contract. The position sits within the provincial agricultural department and offers an entry-level opportunity for a recently qualified technician to contribute to research and development in agricultural resource management. As a candidate-level scientist, the incumbent will work under supervision while building professional competence and working towards full certification as a natural scientist. The role is technical and practical in nature, supporting the station’s broader mandate to improve agricultural practices, ensure sustainable resource use, and provide evidence-based recommendations to stakeholders.
Applicants must hold an NQF level 6 Diploma in Plant or Crop Production. Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Candidate Certificated Natural Scientist is required, as is a valid driver’s licence. No prior work experience is required, making this an ideal opportunity for graduates who have completed their diploma and are ready to enter the scientific workforce. The post demands a solid understanding of scientific methodologies, research and development processes, and legal compliance requirements relevant to agricultural resource management.
The successful candidate will need a range of technical and behavioural skills. These include proficiency in computer-aided scientific applications, technical report writing, decision-making, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, customer focus and responsiveness, communication, computer literacy, planning and organising, conflict management, and problem solving. These competencies are essential for supporting research activities, managing data, and interacting with colleagues and external stakeholders.
In terms of duties, the role involves assisting with the implementation of methodologies, policies, systems and procedures within the unit. The candidate will provide technical support and offer recommendations or advice where appropriate. A significant part of the work includes helping to develop databases, managing data, and performing subsequent analysis to support research outcomes. The incumbent will also conduct research and development activities, as well as assist with administrative and related functions to ensure the smooth running of the unit. This combination of fieldwork, data handling, and administrative support makes the role a well-rounded introduction to scientific research in the public service.
Applicants should note several important conditions. The department uses a specific application process, and manual applications must be submitted on the prescribed Z83 form, which must be fully completed, signed and initialled. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other supporting documents before the interview, and all shortlisted candidates must undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Late or incomplete applications will be disqualified. If applicants have not been contacted within three months of the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful. This is a structured entry-level scientific post, so candidates should be prepared for a rigorous selection process and a professional working environment focused on agricultural research and resource management.
