This position offers an excellent entry-level opportunity for a recent graduate in animal production to join the agricultural research team at Cedara Research Station, one of South Africa’s key agricultural research facilities. As a Candidate Scientific Technician within Agricultural Livestock Research Services, the successful appointee will work on a three-year fixed-term contract, contributing to the scientific and technical work that supports livestock research and development in the province. The role is structured as a candidate-level post, meaning it is designed to provide practical experience and professional growth under the guidance of senior scientific staff, while also fulfilling the requirements for registration as a Certificated Natural Scientist.

Applicants must hold an NQF level 6 Diploma in Animal Production, which forms the core academic foundation for the role. In addition, compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Candidate Certificated Natural Scientist is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. No prior work experience is necessary, making this an ideal position for graduates who are ready to begin their careers in agricultural research. The role demands a solid understanding of scientific methodologies, research and development processes, and legal compliance within a research environment. Candidates should also possess a range of technical and interpersonal skills, including computer-aided scientific applications, technical report writing, decision-making, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, customer focus, communication, computer literacy, planning and organising, conflict management, and problem-solving.

The core duties of the position are varied and hands-on. The technician will assist in the implementation of methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures within the livestock research unit. This includes providing technical support and offering recommendations or advice to researchers and stakeholders. A significant part of the work involves assisting with the development of databases, managing data, and carrying out subsequent analysis to support research findings. The role also includes conducting research and development activities, which may involve field work, data collection, and experimentation. Administrative and related functions are also part of the job, ensuring that the research unit operates smoothly and that records, reports, and documentation are properly maintained.

There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. As a candidate-level scientific technician, the appointee will be expected to work towards full professional registration over time. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment to evaluate ethical conduct. Applicants who hold foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before applying. It is also worth noting that this is a fixed-term contract position, so the appointment will end after three years unless otherwise extended. The post is based at Cedara Research Station, a well-known agricultural research hub, and offers a valuable chance to contribute to the livestock sector while building a professional career in scientific research.
