This position offers three opportunities for a Candidate Engineering Technician to join the provincial Department’s Head Office based at Cedara, working within the agricultural engineering and civil engineering fields. The role is structured as an OSD-graded post, meaning it follows the Occupation Specific Dispensation career path for engineering professionals, providing a clear progression route from candidate level upwards. As a candidate technician, you will be placed under the guidance of more senior engineering staff and will be expected to develop practical competence while contributing to the department’s district-level technical services. The core purpose of the role is to support the delivery of engineering services to the District, which includes assisting with the implementation of infrastructure and agricultural engineering projects from inception through to completion. You will be expected to provide technical assistance on site, prepare designs and analyses, and ensure that all work aligns with legal compliance requirements, engineering norms, and applicable standards.

To be considered for this post, applicants must hold an NQF level 06 qualification in Agricultural Engineering or Civil Engineering. In addition, compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Candidate Engineering Technician is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. No prior work experience is required, making this an excellent entry-level opportunity for recent graduates who have completed their academic requirements and are ready to undertake the practical training needed for professional registration. The department is looking for individuals with a sound knowledge of legal compliance, engineering norms and standards, technical design and analysis, and computer-aided engineering applications. On the technical side, the successful candidate will need project management abilities, technical report writing skills, and a solid grasp of research and development principles. Generic competencies are equally important, including problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, customer focus, communication, computer literacy, planning and organising, and change management.

The main duties of the role are varied and hands-on. You will render technical services to the District, which means being involved in the day-to-day engineering support required by the department’s district operations. You will provide technical assistance in the implementation of projects, helping to ensure that work is completed on time, within budget, and to the required specifications. You will also provide technical advice and guidance to colleagues, stakeholders, and possibly clients, drawing on your knowledge of engineering standards and legal compliance. Research and development forms another key component of the job, allowing you to contribute to improving methods, materials, and processes used by the department. Finally, you will perform administrative and related functions, including record-keeping, reporting, and other tasks that support the smooth running of the engineering unit.

Applicants should note that this is a public service position with specific equity and employment considerations. The department encourages applications from all suitably qualified individuals, and shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and one integrity assessment to evaluate ethical conduct. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), and it is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange this. The post is advertised in the Public Service Vacancy Circular, and all application instructions, including the use of the prescribed Z83 form and the online e-Recruitment system, must be followed strictly to avoid disqualification. If you have not been contacted within three months of the closing date, you should assume that your application was unsuccessful. This is a valuable opportunity for a motivated engineering graduate to begin a structured career in the public sector while contributing to meaningful agricultural and civil engineering projects in KwaZulu-Natal.
