CANDIDATE CLINICAL / ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

This position offers an opportunity for a qualified engineering professional to take responsibility for the safe and effective management of medical equipment across a hospital environment. Based within a clinical engineering context, the role focuses primarily on the renal unit, critical care units, and other hospital sections, ensuring that all medical devices are maintained, serviced, and functioning according to manufacturer specifications and public sector supply chain requirements. The successful candidate will act as a key technical resource, available to troubleshoot equipment faults, initiate corrective actions, and follow through until problems are resolved. This is a hands-on role that also carries significant administrative and advisory responsibilities, including developing and administering a maintenance management system, keeping an accurate medical equipment database, and ensuring compliance with health technology regulations and safety standards.

The ideal candidate must hold a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (light current) or Clinical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification, and must be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineering Technician. At least three years of relevant experience in a clinical engineering environment is required, along with strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to perform well under pressure. Practical knowledge of hand tools and specialised test equipment is essential, including defibrillator analysers, infusion pump analysers, multimeters, ECG simulators, and other resources commonly used in clinical engineering. The role also demands a solid understanding of medical equipment maintenance, problem-solving ability, knowledge of public service regulations and procedures, computer literacy, and familiarity with infection control protocols. Because the position involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team and liaising with suppliers, the ability to build professional networks and stay current with technological developments is important.

Key duties include conducting regular medical equipment risk analyses and safety evaluations, assessing health device alerts and implementing recommended actions, and performing pre-acquisition evaluations of proposed new equipment. The technician will also be expected to motivate for the purchase of medical equipment, formulate technical specifications, and provide ongoing in-house staff training on equipment safety and maintenance. Liaising with medical equipment suppliers to remain informed about the latest technological advances is another core responsibility. Candidates should be prepared to work after hours and be available for on-call duties, as medical equipment support is often needed outside normal working hours.
