This position offers an opportunity to contribute to South Africa’s land administration system as a Cadastral Officer within the Maintenance and Cadastral Spatial Information Services directorate, based in Pretoria. The role is central to ensuring that the country’s cadastral records—the official register of land parcels, diagrams, general plans and sectional title plans—are accurately captured, maintained and made available to both state institutions and the public. Working within the broader Surveyor-General’s office environment, the incumbent supports the legal and spatial integrity of land information by managing both alpha-numeric data and spatial datasets that underpin land ownership, surveying and development decisions.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate as well as a National Certificate in Geomatics or a Survey Officer Certificate at NQF Level 5, along with completion of the prescribed training linked to that qualification. The role demands computer literacy, a sound understanding of spatial data, and knowledge of the functions of Surveyors’-General Offices. Strong interpersonal relations, effective verbal and written communication, proficiency in computer software, and good organisational ability are also essential. These competencies enable the officer to work accurately and collaboratively in a technically demanding environment where errors can have significant legal consequences.

The duties are varied and detail-oriented. The officer will capture, maintain and update alpha-numeric data from newly submitted cadastral documents, perform mathematical consistency checks, and verify data for proposed new land parcels. This includes updating cadastral survey databases, capturing and verifying historical documents, and maintaining an electronic repository. In addition, the role involves withdrawing or cancelling documents, endorsing registered land parcels, leases and servitudes, amending approved documents, inserting new approvals into the archive, and issuing, refiling, repairing and preserving records. A core responsibility is conducting technical examinations of diagrams, general plans, survey records and sectional title plans, as well as checking designations and updating noting sheets.

The officer also supplies cadastral information to internal and external clients, such as issuing survey data to land surveyors and disseminating records to the public in hard copy or digital formats, including providing aerial photographs and rectified imagery from the National Geo-spatial Information unit under service level agreements. On the spatial side, the post involves capturing newly submitted documents to detect spatial overlaps, adding new land parcels to spatial datasets, and maintaining an accurate historical and current cadastral spatial database. Scanning is another key function: all approved, amended, endorsed or withdrawn documents must be scanned and linked to the alpha-numeric data to create a complete digital archive.

This is a permanent, entry-level professional post graded at level 06, with the salary range indicated in the vacancy. The department’s employment equity targets for these two posts specifically encourage applications from Indian and White males, African and Indian females, and persons with disabilities, in line with broader transformation goals. Interested candidates should note that the position is based in Gauteng and that the application process requires submission by the closing date as specified in the circular. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified geomatics or surveying graduate seeking to build a career in cadastral administration and spatial information management within the public service.
